In 1991, India faced a significant financial crisis marked by steep custom tariffs, some as high as 150% on various imports. This economic challenge deeply affected India's imports including the pharmaceutical industry which was heavily dependent on imported active pharmaceutical ingredients and bulk drugs. The escalated duties made importing these essential components economically unfeasible.
Recognizing the necessity to promote domestic manufacturing of these imported bulk drugs and to promote self-reliance and reduce dependence on imports, Lake Chemicals Pvt. Ltd. was founded in 1992 in Bengaluru by Mr. Manoj C. Palrecha, a visionary leader at the age of 31. Mr. Palrecha was motivated by a strong desire and commitment to contribute to India's pharmaceutical sector and improve patient welfare. With a dedicated team of professionals leading various functions who are the pillars of this organization, Lake Chemicals has experienced substantial growth under Mr. Palrecha's guidance.
The company strategically carved out a niche for itself in the psychotropic therapeutic segment, primarily focusing on bulk drugs for the central nervous system, while also manufacturing certain anti-glaucoma and anti-diarrhea APIs. Initially catering to domestic demands, Lake Chemicals progressively expanded into international markets, marking its first export in 1994. Since then, it has extended its reach to over 65 countries, backed by eight Certificates of Suitability (CEPs) for our APIs. Lake has also been regularly inspected and awarded the EU-GMP certification by the Danish Medicines Agency, with the first approval in 2012.
Currently undergoing rapid expansion, Lake Chemicals is set to diversify into multiple therapeutic segments in the near future. The company remains committed to advancing the pharmaceutical domain and anticipates continued contribution to the sector's growth in the coming decade based on the strong foundation on which it has been built.
